Parents & Officiating

Additional Information

Sometimes as parents, we forget that it's "just a game".  A few of the biggest responsibilities as an athlete's parent are encouraging good sportsmanship, responsible behavior, and supporting your child win or lose. Our goal here is to not only improve their skills as a volleyball player on the court, but also as an Official at the table or on the stand.

Long gone are the days where it is acceptable for parents to yell at the officiating team about bad calls or or incorrect scores. As a teenage kid, it can be a little nerve racking to have the responsibility of being an Official for a match. A lot of these kids are just learning how to do this and it can be very intimidating to have parents yelling at them or making comments from the stands. This discourages them from Officiating in future matches and that is the last thing that we want to happen.

Because of this, USA Volleyball has decided to "give parents a taste of their own medicine". It is now required that teams 14U & younger have a registered parent that is certified in scoring.

An adult must be at the score table either doing one of the positions at the score table or sit/stand at or behind the table to monitor the work crew. This is to ensure things run smoothly without unnecessary delays, points and substitutions are recorded accurately and that the work crew stays on task.

This may seem like a daunting task but if 12 year olds can do it, parents can do it!

How to Register for Clinics

Registering for clinics can be tricky. Follow the steps provided and be sure to give yourself a couple of hours to complete the courses. Winter break is a great time to take these!
